They chose a home or specific location to inhabit and take care of it at night (when the occupants are sleeping, as they despise being seen) in exchange for some small offerings of food or cream. If this exchange of goods for services is honoured they will be great allies and the occupants of the home will receive great prosperity but if they are mistreated or made unhappy enough a Brownie can transform into a "Hobgoblin" (see their entry).
